Email Marketing
Why This Matters
You're paying $1-3 per visitor through ads. 97% of those visitors leave without buying. Without email capture, they're gone forever — you paid to bring them and got nothing in return. A simple pop-up offering 10% off captures 3-5% of those visitors' emails, turning a wasted ad dollar into a future customer you can reach for free.
Email marketing returns $36 for every $1 spent — the highest ROI of any marketing channel. And unlike Instagram or TikTok, you own your email list. No algorithm change can take it away. The real power isn't newsletters — it's automated flows (welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase) that generate revenue while you sleep. One well-built welcome sequence typically converts 5-10% of new subscribers into first-time buyers.
Start building your list from day one, even before you have products ready. Every email address is a future customer. A list of 500 engaged subscribers is worth more than 5,000 Instagram followers because you control when and how you reach them.
What You'll Do
Set up email marketing software, create your core automated flows (welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase), and add email capture to your site.
How To Do It
Welcome Sequence Blueprint: 5 Emails That Turn Subscribers Into Buyers
This takes about 2 hours to write and set up. Your welcome sequence is the highest-converting automation you'll build — new subscribers are at peak interest.
1. Set up email capture on your site (15 min)
- Pop-up: Trigger after 5 seconds or on exit intent. Offer 10-15% off first order for an email. Keep it simple: email address only.
- Footer signup: Persistent email field in your site footer.
- Checkout opt-in: "Email me with news and offers" checkbox.
Add three capture points:
Connect all capture points to Klaviyo (best for e-commerce), Mailchimp (easiest for beginners), or Omnisend (best pre-built e-commerce flows).
2. Write your 5-email welcome sequence (60 min)
Email 1: Welcome + discount (immediately) Subject: "Welcome! Here's your 10% off" Deliver the discount code. Brief brand intro (2-3 sentences). CTA to shop. Keep it short.
Email 2: Brand story (Day 2) Subject: "Why we started [Brand Name]" Origin story + founder photo. People buy from people. Soft CTA: "Browse our collection."
Email 3: Best sellers + social proof (Day 4) Subject: "Our customers' favorites" Top 3-5 products with review quotes and star ratings. Social proof does the selling for you.
Email 4: Educational value (Day 6) Subject: Something helpful about your niche Genuine value — a how-to guide, tips, or curated resource. Mention products naturally without hard-selling.
Email 5: Urgency (Day 8) Subject: "Your 10% off expires tomorrow" Final discount reminder with your top 3 products at the discounted price. This email drives the most conversions in the sequence.
3. Configure the automation flow (30 min)
Create a flow triggered by "Subscribed to list." Add delays per the schedule above. Add a condition: if the subscriber purchases at any point, exit them from the welcome sequence and move to post-purchase flow.
4. Test end-to-end (15 min)
Subscribe with your own email. Verify timing, links, discount codes, and mobile rendering. Fix issues before real subscribers enter the flow.
Deliverables
- Email capture live on your site (pop-up with 10% incentive, footer signup, checkout opt-in)
- A 5-email welcome sequence written and configured with correct timing (Day 0, 2, 4, 6, 8)
- Automation flow tested end-to-end: timing, links, discount codes, and conditional exit on purchase

- 1Set up your abandoned cart flow immediately after your welcome sequence — it recovers 5-15% of abandoned carts on autopilot. For a store with 100 abandoned carts/month at $40 AOV, that's $200-600 in recovered revenue monthly from a 30-minute setup.
- 2Segment your list into 3 groups from day one: first-time buyers, repeat customers (2+ orders), and VIPs (top 10% by spend). Send VIPs early access to new products and exclusive offers. Segmented campaigns get 14% higher open rates and 100% higher click rates than unsegmented blasts.
- 3Follow the 80/20 email rule: 80% value (tips, guides, behind-the-scenes, customer stories) and 20% promotional (sales, new products, discount codes). Stores that email only promotions see unsubscribe rates 3x higher than those mixing in educational content.
